IN REMEMBERANCE OF OUR COMMON FOUNDER LADY RYDER

  • Sue Ryder was Born on the 3rd July 1923
  • She volunteered in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry at the age of 16, 1939
  • In 1943 she was posted to Tunisia and later to Italy.
  • In 1953 she established the Sue Ryder Foundation in the UK
  • She was appointed OBE in 1957 by the Queen.
  • In 1959 Sue Ryder married Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC (later Lord Cheshire)
  • They received a joint Variety Club Humanitarian Award in 1975
  • Sue Ryder was appointed CMG in 1976
  • Sue Ryder was made a life peer in 1979, choosing the name Baroness Ryder of Warsaw
  • In 1989 Lady Ryder made an appeal through The Daily Telegraph to obtain more funding and collected £40,000 through the Lady Ryder of Warsaw Appeals Fund.
  • In February 2000 Lady Ryder set up the Bouverie Foundation (since renamed The Lady Ryder of Warsaw Memorial Trust)
  • She died in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, in 2000, aged 77
