The Sue Ryder International office in Prague submitted three grant applications to the Czech Development Agency, the public body responsible for development assistance funds, in late 2010. All three applications have now been approved.

The first project is based upon “Strengthening the rights and capacities of people with epilepsy in Malawi”, and it aims to tackle discrimination, lack of access to medicines, and lack of representation of people with epilepsy. These problems can only be resolved by increased government involvement and the creation of a national plan to fight discrimination. The project in Malawi hopes to “achieve sustainable change in the lives of people with epilepsy and their consequentintegration into social, economical, and political life."

The second application is for a project in Albania that centers on ensuring that the NGO Sector becomes a stabilized and recognised partner involved in healthare in the country. A set of recommendations is expected to be made to plan a successful palliative care system in the country. In order for this to materialize an analysis of the current situation and identification of the issues which result in specific problems for the non-profit sector must be completed, as well as on-going lobbying of parliament bodies. This will enable system changes in the relationship between the government and NGOs involved in health and social care.

The third application is for a new partnership project that aims to make internal and external communication between Sue Ryder organisations more efficient. The desired results of this project include creating a higher number of joint Sue Ryder projects which will more accurately reflect the needs of target groups. More specifically it will address a larger number of potential partners and donors participating in Sue Ryder projects. The tools used for this partnership project will be E-media (including Capsa and the Sue Ryder International Facebook page), the Sue Ryder International E-newsletter and a two-day conference to be organised in Prague.

Another application was also submitted to the Czech-Polish Forum for a pilot project on how to organise joint international
fundraising events between Poland and the Czech Republic. As both organisations have different experience with regards to fundraising activities, the grant will financially support an exchange of experiences as well as strengthen their cooperation. A proposed plan of action is the creation of a joint fundraising working group that will arrange two joint Czech-Polish fundraising events; a sporting event and a cultural event. An analysis of these events will then be prepared with the hope of creating more beneficial and successful future fundraising events for NGOs involved in health and social care.
